Tony Blair erweitert seine ohnehin nicht gerade kleine Regierung um eine weitere Ministerin. Ab nächster Woche wird Hazel Blears Ministerin für “Social Exclusion”. Was man sich darunter vorzustellen hat, beschreibt der Telegraph:

The rising living standards and (Left-wing myth notwithstanding) generous welfare budgets of the Thatcher and Major governments had largely eradicated serious material deprivation in the lives of the people. “Social exclusion” recognised that misery is about more than money.

The poor today suffer a poverty of the spirit, no less – a poverty of relationships, of opportunity and of access to the supporting associations that simultaneously soften the blows of life and stiffen the individual to withstand them.

Und wer könnte diesen Ausschluss aus der Gesellschaft besser beheben als der Staat, glaubt offenbar New Labour. Aber das ist ein Denkfehler. Noch einmal der Telegraph:
